Renegade Analytics Department

The Renegade Analytics Department (RAD) is made up of Steve Nicholls, formerly known as the Renegade Rookie, who having proved himself has finally been given his own department and office in the basement. RAD will provide a deeper insight into sport and fantasy by crunching the numbers. Steve Nicholls is a semi-pro writer/fantasy sports player, willing to give any sport a chance though his love lies with cricket, American football, league, union and ice hockey.

RFS Bosses: Round 20

It is over. And it seems fitting that a popular, but not overwhelmingly so, player would put in the best fantasy effort we have ever seen. Nathan Cleary’s 126 was a phenomenal performance. A three try, two try assist, two line break, one line break assist was beefed up by 10 points from goals and another 24 from kicking metres. It was an out of this world performance.

We’re going to cover a bit on the bye period but first we’ll cover the usual stuff on the top 5000.

The top 5,000

First the weekly average scores at various ranking intervals:

It is easy to forget that this was a bye round. Most people easily fielded a decent 17 and that led to some massive scores. It is probably an early sign of things to come as the next three or four weeks are likely to be the biggest scoring rounds of the year as people round out their final sides, and before injuries kick in.

The Top 18 teams are currently separated by less than 180 points while the top 7 are split by less than 75 points. It is really unusual that there would be so many teams still in the running. Last season the top 7 sides were separated by 154 points and the top 18 by 290 points, while in 2015 the top 7 were split by 146 points and the top 18 by 233. We don’t know how many trades everyone has but this could be a very interesting end to the season.

Bosses’ Performances

The Bosses averaged 918 points but there was a bit of a split with four Bosses scoring over 1k, with a high of 1,035, while another four Bosses scored less than 850 and one of those managed just 762.

Here’s where the Bosses are ranked:

No change here although there were a couple of Bosses who moved up into the top 500 and should be in for a strong run home.

Captain choices

With a lot of people having a surplus of players there were only two loopholes this week. One Boss looped Gallen and the other looped de Belin. The rest of the captains were Taumalolo (6), Mannering (3), Gallen (2), Trbojevic (1) and Taupau (1).

The Bye Rounds

13 of the 15 Bosses improved their position during the bye period and both of the Bosses that didn’t improve lost less than 50 places. But there were two stand out Bosses that scored over 300 points more than the next best Boss. These two Bosses had a lot of volume (93 and 95 players) but they also had a lot of quality with the 2nd and 4th best average per player among the Bosses. Obviously quantity and quality is best. So, even the teams that weren’t that great managed to increase their ranks by quite a bit. The teams that were strong managed to make some huge gains, this really illustrates the potential gains from some planning (and a bit of good fortune) during this time of the year.

It is interesting to note that the team that used the most number of trades was well down the list. Trades isn’t really a telling factor because we aren’t considering the trades in the weeks leading up to the byes. In this case those 18 trades still only got to 82 players, that’s a combo of low numbers coming in but also a bit of bad luck with injuries and a little bit of poor trading.

The average scoring by the Bosses was up almost 100 points compared to last year which is almost entirely due to there being 86.6 players this year compared to 85 last year (the average per player was 51.49 this year and 51.34 last year). Last year the average rank improvement was 43% compared to 67% this year. Finally, the gap between the top and bottom teams widened this year. This year the top team scored 4,987 and the bottom team scored 3,748, last year the top team scored 4,723 and the bottom team 3,823.

Trades

Four Bosses didn’t trade this week. All of them could field a 17 and probably felt they would hold off adding final pieces until this week. Two Bosses traded once and the rest used both trades.

Here’s the trades remaining for all the Bosses:

With players like SJ, Merrin and Reynolds dropping this week it could be an ominous sign of the post Origin injury carnage we experienced a couple of seasons ago are back.

The only surprising thing here is Crichton but it is important to remember that Crichton was at his peak value and is almost certain not going to return the level of points his price commands. If trading him now allows you to get a similar level of player for a lot less while also grabbing a gun in another spot it is a defensible move. We’ll see how it plays out though.

Nothing out of the ordinary there.

Composite Team

The composite team scored 997 which in part made up for a terrible week in round 18. It has moved back inside the top 1k.

This side has a real problem that can come from just trying to maintain the popular players in other people’s teams. It has 17 decent players (though I’d be concerned about Fuimaono’s minutes to rely on him) but too many of those players are WFBs and there is a lack of DPP flexibility to cover spots. Grabbing a second HOK will be important. At the moment the second most popular HOK is Andrew McCullough although I wonder if CS9 will come back into a few teams. There is also a need for a HLF replacement for Shaun Johnson and I might do this by moving Munster to HLF and grabbing Tom Trbojevic to play CTR. Trbojevic is only in five teams but with Fuimaono trending downwards and Scott not picked (quietly I think his scoring will probably dry up anyway – he’s not Mark friggin Gasnier!) Trbojevic might be a safe option at CTR.

RFS Bosses: Round 18

We are almost through what has been an apocalyptic bye period for many of us. On paper (or bye planner spreadsheet) this round doesn’t seem that bad but neither was round 13 or round 16 and look how they turned out. People should be really close to final teams and by round 20 your teams should be done, pending injuries.

Five bosses in the top 100 is really pleasing, in fact having 10 in the top 1,000 is pretty good too.

Captain choices

Hard to believe but there were only two loopholes played this week, both had the C on Dylan Edwards and VC on Angus Crichton. The reasons for people not loopholing were:

  • Sam Burgess as VC – 9 Bosses
  • Greed punished (captained Taupau or Cleary) – 3 Bosses
  • Greed rewarded (captained Nathan Brown) – 1 Boss

The people that had the VC on Burgess got stuck with Martin Taupau (5), Brown (2), Cleary (1) and Edwards (1) so it was a bit of a mixed bag.

One Boss didn’t trade, another traded one and the rest used both trades.

Seeing a few Bosses dump RTS is a bit surprising but there’s such a surplus of WFB around something has to give and with RTS on the shelf last week I guess it is an easy choice.

Nathan Brown and Aiden Tolman are interesting trade ins considering they are both on byes this week but not a lot of decent FRF.

Composite Team

The composite team scored a pathetic 384 after being stuck with just 8 players. It also seems to have too many trades left (7) and still no pathway to sorting out the second hooker spot. Ranked 1,353 but should be good for a top 1k finish.

Looking forward

One final bye round but it should be pretty easy to field 17 players baring some sort of disaster.

What we learnt: Eels v Storm

  1. This game was going to be all about Curtis Scott….wait…Curtis Scott isn’t playing….what? Honestly what a mess. At one point I was going to have 17 players this week, now it is at 13 and this hasn’t been an unfamiliar feeling for fantasy coaches all bye period. For the record he apparently has an illness, rather than injury and with Blair getting injured again you'd think he'd be back in the team after the bye.
  2. Just when I was finally starting to get over the fact that Bodene Thompson has played significantly better now that he’s off my fantasy team Semi Radradra does this to me…. Over the period I had Semi his best score was 55 and he also had a 12. Tonight, he managed to equal the combination of those two scores in about 25 minutes and he’d finish with 79 points. Some players just never do good things when they are on your team.
  3. While I am ranting about players that do better when they aren’t on my fantasy team I give you Nathan Brown. Brown averaged 31 (I’m counting the game he missed as a 0) while I had him. Now he has scores of 65 and 68. But at least I got Jesse Bromwich right?
  4. Speaking of Bromwich he scored 45 tonight which I think you’d take as a fantasy coach.
  5. Who else is relevant here? Joe Stimson played! I don’t have him but some do. He scored 16.
  6. Tohu Harris spent to night at centre after Cheyse Blair got injured. It went about as well as Harris’ time at centre normally goes. 34 points.
  7. Clinton Gutherson scored a late try which pushed his fantasy score to 56. He’s scored tries in three of his last six games but even in the games he hasn’t had tries he has had scores of 46, 41 and 30 which isn’t bad at all.
  8. Corey Norman hasn’t had a score over 45 since round 9 after doing it in six of his first eight games. I’m not sure if his combination with Moses hurts his fantasy scores but he’s been decidedly average.
Saturday, 08 July 2017 00:00

What we learnt: Sea Eagles v Panthers

  1. Daly Cherry Evans has got things right at the right time of year for fantasy coaches. Since the Sea Eagles finished their byes DCE has scores of 55, 55 and 61 tonight. He’s still way too reliant on attacking stats so some below par scores are going to come but this period has been really nice.
  2. Nathan Cleary didn’t quite match his opposite but he too has been an ideal pick up since the Panthers’ byes finished with scores of 77, 46 and 58 tonight. Probably a better bet to avoid crappy scores down the line too.
  3. You loopholed Crichton and didn’t keep the double points on Martin Taupau (46), Trent Merrin (33) or Dylan Edwards (36) right? As I wrote earlier in the week with such an unpredictable mix of captain options you play the VC on any 50+ score. The risk/benefit doesn’t match up for doing anything else.
  4. Shaun Lane isn’t exactly fantasy relevant but his score tonight (55) might be worth tucking away for next season. Frank Winterstein surely doesn’t hold his starting role next season; he’s old and average. Lane had a lost season with the Bulldogs and Warriors last year and this season hasn’t been much better but he’s been a pretty quality fantasy player when he’s given an opportunity.
  5. Tom Trbojevic managed to hit a 50 score with a try. He’s not normally a tackle break machine but he had five tonight. His best this season is seven (which he has manged three times) but tonight’s five is the next best and compares to his 3.5 on the season. Compare that to Tedesco (7.9), Ponga (6.3), Edwards (8.1) or Josh Dugan (6.8) and you can see why Trbojevic isn’t quite the fantasy player of those others.
  6. So, Matt Moylan stops scoring tries and his fantasy scores suck, anyone shocked? Moylan scored tries in six of his last eight games and in that time had scores of 55, 62, 51, 38, 48, 29, 37 and 25. I guess you know which ones he didn’t score tries in.
  7. Some people have held Lloyd Perrett all season so for them tonight’s score of 43 is richly deserved. Enjoy it everybody.
  8. Josh Mansour has been the anti DCE/Cleary. He’s really sucked since the byes finished. The first game was good when he scored 58 but last week’s 27 (with a try) and tonight’s 20 is really horrible. He is shaping as a massive blunder.
  9. I don’t know if anyone actually got him but there was some chat on Tyrone Peachey last week as he slotted into a starting centre role. Well, he’s going to be a lot cheaper next week after scoring 20 tonight.

RFS Bosses: Round 17

Before you started playing fantasy you wouldn’t believe that a minor knee injury to Lewis Brown could make you distraught or a surprise bench appearance for Luke Yates could make your day. But fantasy does strange things to us all. There’s no time of the season that heightens are emotions quite like the bye period and this bye period has been very, very exhausting. So much so that I’m almost ready to embrace the prospect of a reduction in bye weeks next season!

Basically every bye round has provided new frustrations. The Thurston injury impacted two popular fantasy players in Milford and Munster. There were the Graham, Norman and Brown injuries just as people brought them in at the start of the bye period. There was whatever Joey Leilua did for a month. The Vaughan injury. The Kaysa Pritchard injury. The other Graham injury. There was CS9 not backing up from Origin. Numerous cash outs scoring 9 the week before or after they scored 30. The improbable rise of Brandon Smith and Curtis Scott who you might not have had. The Brandon Smith injury. This week it is the Brown and Whare injuries. Worries over Jesse Bromwich. The previously mentioned Origin selection for Cam Munster. The lack of useful cash outs at the positions you need them in.

It is almost over. But by the time it is you’ll be out of trades. Damn you to hell Lewis Brown.

It was backs that saved a lot of teams this week. In a week in which there were a few under whelming forwards it was guys like Shaun Johnson, Curtis Scott, Dylan Edwards, Cody Walker, Adam Reynolds, Nick Cotric and Cam Munster that helped push those 900+ scores this week. Here are the scores returned by the 11 most popular forwards valued over $450k: 42, 48, 74, 48, 52, 68, 55, 44, 57, 48 and 32. There’s a lot of yuck in there.

And here’s the actual points behind first for each of the top 5,000.

Bosses’ Performances

The Bosses averaged pretty similar to the top 5k with a score of 910. 10 of the Bosses dropped ranks although half of these were cosmetic drops only. Only two Bosses made percentage increases above 25% and one of these was 2nd to 3rd, nice work K5!

Captain choices

A range of captains this week with Crichton (3), Taumalolo (7), Gallen (2), Burgess (1), Smith (1) and Taupau (1). Smith was the clear winner with Crichton the only other player to score over 50. Weird.

The loophole is back in play this week. Angus Crichton or Sm Burgess will both make good Vice Captain options, or even Jake Friend, as they all play in the first game. That will leave you with options like Merrin, Taupau or Cleary as captain options. Dylan Edwards and DCE are the higher variance alternatives. With most of the good players playing in the first two games it does limit the options. And considering who that the captain options aren’t that reliable I would be inclined to loop anything above 50 this week.

Trades

One Boss didn’t trade, another traded one and the rest used both trades.

One Boss is within touching distance of being out of trades. The norm though is still in the 6-8 trades remaining range. With most people looking to get their final teams in round 19 or 20 I would expect that teams will get there with only 2 or 3 trades in reserve. That’s a trade or two less in previous years although my impression is that people have more depth, particularly in the outside backs, so gambling on 2 or 3 trades to cover the forwards could be worthwhile.

What an absolute failure James Graham has been. Here’s his efforts over the time period most of us traded him in: 30, 18, 40, DNP 44, DNP. Oh and his price also dropped from $467,000 in round 11 to $364,000 now, it is even worse if you traded him in round 9 when he was priced at $523,000 and scored 9. With a 45 point season average perhaps he is undervalued for next year or perhaps mounting injuries make him finished as a fantasy gun? The rest of the trades is just tidying up.

I was expecting to see more Panthers, Sea Eagles and Rabbits (not Knights because players from the Knights suck) getting traded in here. We see a little bit of that with Taupau, Edwards, Surgess, Cleary and Mansour but certainly not as much as expected. There were also the cash outs to Lewis Brown and Dean Whare. People can talk all they want about these guys being busts that shouldn’t have been traded in but we are all subject to the vagaries of fate. That is just bad luck and you can’t always wait until the week you need these guys before you get them. The other interesting trend here is at hooker as we see trades for McCullough and King. There are now five Bosses teams that have a pair of gun hookers that don’t include Cam Smith, presumably they aren’t planning on getting him back. There are also three more Bosses stuck with cheap HOK they clearly aren’t planning to upgrade or might struggle to do so. It has been a season of firsts for our relationship with Cam Smith in fantasy and it could be the first time CS9 is a POD down the stretch! Whether he is a good POD or a bad POD (some rumours have suggested rests down the final weeks) remains to be seen.

Composite Team

The composite team scored 937 which was a decent return and sees its rank push inside the top 1k for the first time.

As I mentioned last week this team sucks for round 18. At the moment it only has eight players and there’s not many ways it can get much better with Suli and perhaps Munster the only real sources of trade outs. Munster is in ten teams so I won’t be trading him. Suli to Chanel Mata’utia adds some cash and one player.

The big picture for this team is pretty good except for one glaring issue. The side has both the good props, six 2RF who average over 57, two gun HLF and should have enough players to cover CTR and WFB. What it lacks is a decent fourth reserve and considering the ideal would be either to have that as a HOK, FRF or HLF and none of the players currently in those spots is worth more than $170k that means a huge amount of cash needs to come from somewhere. This isn’t a unique problem and is something I’ve seen a few teams stuck with. I think CS9 will be the second most popular HOK, although McCullough might be close. Upgrading Hampton to CS9 will cost $412k and even just going to AM9 will cost $307k. That’s a lot of money to find, and probably requires the re-direction of money spent at CTR or WFB. There’s five Bosses that have Brailey, Brandon Smith or Connor Watson and they might face the choice of cashing those guys to Cam King this week or upgrading to McCullough next week or Smith the week after. A second gun HOK is definitely part of the ideal team composition but it’ll be interesting to see if people are willing to forgo that for King who might be a 19th or 20th man type of player.

Looking forward

There is a lack of quality cash outs which puts a downer on snagging some extra players this week. Cam King was mentioned above but there is also Lindsay Collins (FRF), Andy Saunders (FRF), Sione Katoa (HOK/2RF), Sitaleki Akauola (2RF), Mark Nicholls (2RF), Asipeli Fine (CTR) and Chanel Mata’utia. None of them look like strong scorers and none have (useful) DPP. Personally I’m just going to cash out to an NPR that has DPP because it will benefit my team more than the handful of points these guys would probably get me.

But of course bye coverage can feel a bit consuming compared to the bigger picture in weeks like this. So, let’s take a look at the Bosses before trades:

That is a lot of Bosses on Struggle Street this week although I suspect a final number of around 12 or 13 players might end up being about average. Combined with some late drop outs people seem to have fired most of their shots at the early bye rounds.

What we learnt: Rabbits v Panthers

  1. This was a 2014 era performance from the bunnies who overcame a slow start to completely dismantle the Panthers. The Rabbits’ spine had their best game of the year with Adam Reynolds in particular having a superb game (65 points, two try assists, a line break, a line break assist and seven goals). Alex Johnston scored five tries (but he “only” scored 85 points).
  2. Robbie Farah had a strong 55 minutes (48 fantasy points). His 16 back in round 14 is looking like a bit of an outlier in his recent run of 40 point performances. Hopefully fantasy coaches with him don’t get another outlier next week when they need him.
  3. Cody Walker was able to spend a bit of the game in space and would finish with 62 points, mostly from a couple of big plays but he also ran for 165 metres.
  4. Angus Crichton was one of the few captaincy options to go ok this week with a score of 56. This wasn’t the sort of game for Crichton to make heaps of tackles (he only had 23) so his score was only really going to be strong if he had a try or three but he only really had one decent run in the whole game. Still 56 is better than some of the alternatives.
  5. Trent Merrin had 54 in 64 minutes. That’s a small jump in minutes compared to the last two weeks (he had 48 in both round 14 and 16) and that’s encouraging but what would be more encouraging is seeing a locked in 60+ minute role every single week. Regardless he’s probably a buy for next week.
  6. Sam Burgess had a funny old game. He racked up almost 25 points of negatives (including a sin binning) but he also had a try and a try assist. He’d finish with 45 points, a pass considering all those negatives, but it could have been a lot more. He also spent almost half an hour on the edge which didn't help his scoring or that of Tyrell Fuimaono who took a spell on the bench, he still finished with an ok 39 and another bog price rise.
  7. George Burgess had 39 points at almost a point a minute. After his epic flop on round 15 this will be some hope that he can make it count in round 18 and 19. His four tackle breaks were his best count this season.
  8. Dylan Edwards never stopped trying and was easily the best Panther on the field tonight. His constant efforts were rewarded with a strong run late on the game that gave him about 20 points and pushed his score up to 63. Oh yeah and that will put his price over $400k now too. Not bad at all.
  9. Josh Mansour had a really quiet game with not many opportunities outside of dummy half runs early in sets. He did nab a cheap try right on the end of the game to get his score to 29. If this is how the Panthers play down the stretch Mansour owners should be concerned but it was probably a blip. Matt Moylan also had a try to save his score. He finished with 37 points. Nathan Cleary also finished on 37 points.
  10. Popular cash out Dean Whare had a poor game (8 points) and went off with a jaw injury. The points are probably less concerning than the potential for an injury to put him on the shelf for next week’s bye round.

What we learnt: Tigers v Knights

  1. When people predicted that Luke Brooks was the next Andrew Johns they clearly meant in games when Brooks was playing against the Knights. That’s probably true for a lot of halves but this was one of the better games Brooks has played in a while. In Brooks’ 2013 debut it was his running game that was the most impressive but that has evaporated over the last four seasons. During the 74 games of the last four seasons Brooks has just 12 line breaks, for a comparison in about the same number of games Mitchell Moses has 24 line breaks. Tonight, Brooks showed the willingness to run and had his first ever two-line break game. It was the Knights but still he ended up with 62 points.
  2. Tuimoala Lolohea had a great first half but he disappeared in the second. That’s not the first time this season that has happened but he still finished up with 57 points and has now averaged 44.4 since joining the Tigers and might be an option to hold at WFB all year.
  3. Malakai Watene Zelezniak scored a try and will make a little bit of money (37 with a BE of 18). I suspect people that have him might rather he get a game at centre so he can get that DPP over making a little bit more money. He’s currently in a very annoying cash out range between $180-200k.
  4. The Tigers controlled a lot of the ball so Elijah Taylor’s tackle count and thus fantasy score was pretty poor (35). That’ll happen but the Tigers aren’t going to dominate a lot of teams so it shouldn’t happen much. For the people with the patience to get through his early season struggles he’s been a good option.
  5. Alex Twal is a promising prop who has just joined the Tigers from Parramatta and he had a very strong game (44 in 41 minutes). Hopefully he gets a few low minute outings over the back end of the season to tank his 2018 fantasy price because he would be a decent cash cow next season.
  6. Jamie Buhrer had his first game back from injury and looked pretty solid (48). He’s an interesting POD but one I’m not sure I would be gambling with.
  7. Dane Gagai (81) and Jacob Liddle (63) were the top scorers but neither of them are fantasy relevant.
