Simona under investigation

The Wests Tigers have today confirmed that Tim Simona is under investigation by the NRL's integrity unit. Allegations are that Simona has breached the rules regarding the betting by players on NRL matches. Simona risks having his contract de-registered should the allegations prove true. We'll bring you more as we hear it, but it doesn't sound good.
With the Auckland Nines done and dusted for another season and my week long hangover nearing its end, it's time to look into the trial teams named and see how they stack up with unavailable/injured players. Some teams have named squads for the trials so I'll try and predict their starting line-ups from the players named. Cowboys v Roosters, 8pm…

NRL 2017 Primer/Preview

Favourites These teams have a very strong chance of finishing the 2017 season as the NRL Premiers and are a good enough bet to beat any other side in the competition and have a deep finals run. Penrith Panthers Penrith, on paper, have perhaps the most stacked roster in the competition that we've seen in a long time. Maintaining the…
This is the last episode that was filmed in 2015, next week’s finale is a live event so the final three have been waiting a long, long time to resolve this. But who will those three be? First scene is for the ladies as the boys frolic topless on the beach. I haven’t seen that much pec since I last…
We are down to six rookies and it is reasonable to say they are all pretty decent players. Roydon Gillett a robust centre. Reece Joyce the only remaining half who has had some issues with a lack of willingness to take on the line but is a solid defender. Jordan Martin the youngest and most dynamic player. Lou Goodwin a…
Just four episodes and ten rookies left. We can count on at least two rookies getting eliminated this week but it could be more. Hold your breath! Captain’s Challenge at Cockatoo Island and we finally have a challenge that might resemble something NRL teams might do in the pre-season. Power and Pain: max squat thrusts in 60 seconds, ice weights…
You can hide where you want to. You can run where you *I can’t make out this word*. But nothing on earth is going to sway me when the man comes down this way. It is NRL Rookie time! The boys are off to New Zealand. And it starts with a Captain’s Challenge. Jordan Martin is in a sling. Chris…
The NRL Rookie were kind enough to give us a sneak peek on a major injury this week so I’ve had some time to prepare myself for it. Whether it is a swerve or the NRL Rookie is going to kill off favourites like they are Starks I don’t know but it is time to find out. Straight into the…
Jesse Shearer’s dream ended last week but we’re still left with 14 hopefuls, by my math 13 more weeks of the NRL rookie, so there’s lots to cover. My Sky box let me down and only started recording part way through the first challenge, lesson learnt: always watch the NRL Rookie live like you would any other sporting event that…
After a long, long gestation period the NRL Rookie hit our television screens last night. I was interested to see the show mostly to feed my obsession for trying to identify NRL Fantasy cash cows, but I’m also interested in talent identification outside of the normal means. Talent identification is not an exact science and there are probably dozens of…
With the Warriors' season quickly fading away, the decision was made that the culture needed to be changed. Was Konrad Hurrell released to reverse the situation, or merely made a scapegoat? Hurrell has not helped himself, with his constant social media gaffs and lack of performance on the park, his lack of self awareness was astounding. In a refreshing statement…
Following on from the Scarfie’s NRL draft I thought it would be fun to do the more plausible (well slightly more plausible) NRL rookie draft. Any player who hasn’t played first grade is eligible for the draft and the draft order is based on 2015 finishing order; worst is first. 1st Round 1st Pick – Newcastle Knights select Tevita Pangai…

The Scarfie's NRL Draft

If you don’t live under a rock then you would know that the NFL just completed the draft for the 2016/17 season. There is always a lot of hype surrounding the possible picks with a few of the players moving up the draft rankings or sliding right down on draft day. Being both a NFL and NRL fan I’ve decided…
A recent survey of NRL fans, commentators and players has revealed that the NRL rulebook needs an immediate rewrite. The comprehensive questionnaire covered all aspects of the game, including the number of referees, the bunker, specific rules, and the salary cap. The survey was commissioned by the NRL in response to reactions from the media around the new obstruction rule.…
Rep Weekend is this weekend and as we have learnt from previous years sometimes the Pacific Island games are the best ones to watch with the players representing their countries of origin giving their all on the big stage. Even though this match is seen as the lead up match to the Samoa vs. Tonga game these two sides boast…
The rep round weekend is a time for us to pause and reflect on some of the issues of the season. By far and away the most important discussion point is that of Kieran Foran. His challenges are so much greater than trivial matters about bunker failures, offside lines and stray shoulders. This is a man at the peak of…

Dear NRL

Dear NRL Every Tuesday evening I open up my computer, log on to nrl.com and peruse the team lists. Keenly checking the ins and outs, I firstly start with my own beloved team and rant about who I would have in and complain about the ones who must be related to the coach. I then go through every team and…
Across the weekend Renegades will be analysing the national teams which will be featured across next weekend’s representative round, with Samoa first up. The Samoan side is always remarkably strong, and will undoubtedly see some regular first graders miss out on spots in the team. The side will look somewhat different this year, with Peyroux, Michael Sio and Carlos Tuimivave…
Across the weekend Renegades will be analysing the national teams which will be featured across next weekend’s representative round, here is Papua New Guinea's side. The Papua New Guinean side has always been a favourite of the Rugby League World with Papua New Guinea the only country in the world where Rugby League is the national sport. One thing the…
As exciting as their match is going to be, I can see Tonga really struggling to win against Samoa. It will be a tight one without a doubt, as it always is between the two arch rivals. But Tonga’s side has been decimated by players leaving for England, along with marquee men Tui Lolohea and Siosiua Taukeiaho no longer eligible…
